Swift Setwing Dymethis velox

Date: June 25, 2005, Barton Creek, Austin, TX
Filename: /images/2005/2005-06-2005-Dragonfly.jpg

About this photo:

Linda talked me into trudging down the creek early in the morning to photograph insects and spiders. I'm sure glad she did, as we managed to get this shot, which I think is one of my best.

A friend, Dodge Engleman, got some experts he knows to help with the ID. After they told me what this is, I see that it looks like the picture in Dragonflies through Binoculars, plate 46 (4).

I think this is the best photo of 2005, and one of the best I've ever taken.

It's worth pointing out that this photo was improved immensely by Linda's suggestion to crop it differently. I had the dragonfly centered, but Linda thought it would look more dramatic with the insect nearer the edge of the frame, ready to leap into action.

The female Swift Setwing looks quite a bit different.
